I am not your niche market.

An Open Letter to Christians about Evan Almighty:

Dear Friends,

It is not new for Hollywood to use Christians as fodder for jokes and examples of the worst of humanity.  That is why some of you might be impressed by Evan Almighty.  After all, it displays everything an North American 21st century, post-Bush, globally minded evangelical could want, right?  It a family centered, heart warming story, with no unneccessary violence, flesh or language.  It will make you feel warm and fuzzy about how God wants you and your family to work together happily and do nice things for people.

Do not be decieved.  This movie is a ploy.

Years ago, a few Christians got together and came up with a plan to organize as a political blok.  This has resulted in a very politicized and marketable subculture.  Evan Almighty has taken advantage of this fact.

Do not get me wrong: I believe that it is a Christian's duty to steward the planet (cf: Genesis 1-2).  I think families are a good thing.  But this movie is not a "Christian" movie (whatever a "christian" movie is anyways...)

This movie is the result of what happens when you organize yourself into a political blok.  Someone comes along with a pet issue. They manipulate you.  They tell you how wonderful you are, and how much they support your values.  They use you to accomplish their goals.

This movie should be a wake up call to all Christians, reminding us that we are on a mission from God.  What if we were so busy proclaiming the gospel, freeing slaves, stewarding the environment, raising people out of poverty and healing the sick that they made a movie about us doing the work of God.

I'm not posting.

I have a new rule:

No posting when I'm tired.

My goal is to stop constantly sounding more depressed and dreary than I am.

Slowly but surely

Slowly but surely, life in San Antonio is starting to become, well, life.

My days are falling into a routine.  Go by the office.  Sip decaf in Starbucks.  I talk to new people.  I attempt to converse about the Spurs.  I drive 30 minutes to get anywhere.

My apartment contains a loveseat, a chair, a bed and a shower curtain.  I listen to NPR or one my thousands of Podcasts.  Afternoons are filled with lifting weights and drinking protein.  The day ends by restlessly, reading until a combination of exhaustion and the related melancholy causes me to pass out on my love seat.

I try to go places where there are people, and, once more, try to make new relationships.  It's the same game again-"Whats your name?  What's your job/major? Where you from?"- different yet the same.  There are moments where this is fun; there are moments when good times with something new only resurrect ghostly memories of someone from the past.

Yet things do come together.  Having a routine, a plan, and knowing people can make even a foreign environment feel natural.
